Indian Air force is one of the major pillars of Indian Armed Forces. Joining IAF and serving the nation is a prestigious feeling that happens to just the selected few among thousands of candidates applying for it. IAF gives fruitful career and life filled with enthusiasm, thrill, and courage.
Indian Air force offers two ways of commissioning to join these armed forces, which includes Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission. A Permanent Commission means a career in the Air force till the age of retirement of officers while people joining through Short service commission are appointed for a limited time period in Indian Air force.
There are various ways of entry Schemes to join IAF after the completion of Graduation. The details of Joining Indian Air force as officer after graduation under these commissions are enlightened below.
Ways to Join Indian Air Force as Officer after Graduation
Both men and women can join Indian Air Force according to their qualification, age limit and other eligibility in Flying Branch, Technical Branch and Ground duty Branch
Air Force Common Aptitude Test (AFCAT) Entry
Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is organized on a larger scale to recruit candidates in three branches of Air Force i.e. Flying, Technical, and Ground duties. Flying branch candidates will be selected for Short Service Commission while other two are selection on Permanent Commission basis. Usually notification regarding this entry is issued in June and December months of every year.
Male/ Female candidates who are unmarried and citizen of India are eligible for this AFCAT Entry.
Age of aspirants should be between 19 years and 23 years to apply for Flying branch, 18 to 28 years for Technical branch, and 20 to 23 years for Ground duties branch.
- Flying Branch: Candidates should have passed Graduation (10 + 2 + 3) in any stream with physics and Mathematics subjects in 10 +2 or BE/ B.Tech.
- Technical Branch: Candidates should have passed Four year Degree qualification, passed Section A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers or Graduated in Aeronautical/ Tele communication/ Electronics.
- Ground Duty Branch: Aspirants should have passed Graduation in any stream from a recognized University/ Institute.
Second way to join Indian Air Force is through CDS Exam.
Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE) Entry
Unmarried male candidates for flying branch are selected through CDSE Entry scheme. These posts are offered through Permanent Commission unlike AFCAT Flying branch under SSC. Usually notification related to CDSE Entry scheme is issued in months of May and November every year.
Candidates should be citizen of India as per the Indian government rules.
Candidates should be between 19 years and 23 years of age.
Candidates should hold 3 years Graduation in any discipline from recognized Institute/ University. Additionally, aspirants should have cleared 10 +2 level with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. BE/ B Tech (Four year course) passed candidates can also apply for this entry scheme.

University Entry Scheme (UES) Entry
Male candidates appearing in pre- final year of Engineering Degree can apply for this UES Entry Scheme. Candidates will be selected under Permanent Commission in the Technical course of IAF.
Selection of candidates will be done on campus and they will be called for AFSB (SSB). Usually this notification is issued during December of every year.
Candidates should be unmarried and citizen of India.
Candidates should be between 18 and 28 years of age.
Candidates should be appearing in pre final year of BE/ B Tech degree with aggregate 60% marks in all subjects on completion of this course.
Other entry to join Indian Air Force is NCC Special Entry.
National Cadet Corps (NCC) Special Entry
Candidates holding Air Wing Senior Division C certificate of the National Cadet Corps can apply for flying branch officers in Indian Air Force. Candidates can join IAF through this gateway of NCC special entry under the Permanent Commission. Usually candidates have to apply through their respective Air Squadrons/ DG of NCC.
All criteria are same as eligibility criteria in CDSE Entry except additional requirement of NCC Air wing Senior Division C Certificate.
